This is the built-in grinder question. The Barista Express puts a burr grinder inside the case; the Bambino Plus leaves it to you and a second appliance. Sage prices that at £100 to £150, with a twist: the cheaper machine is the one that textures milk on its own.

What they share is the brewing end: a 54 mm portafilter, single and dual wall baskets in one and two cup, a 54 mm tamper, the Razor dose trimming tool, a 15 bar pump, PID, Sage’s Claro Swiss filter and a two year UK guarantee.
The £100 to £150 is not the grinder budget
The Express is £499.95. The Bambino Plus is £349.95 at John Lewis and £399.95 in Sage’s own shop, so the gap is £100 to £150 before a grinder enters the sum. What the grinder adds depends on which one you pick, and that half of the bill is yours to price.
What Sage does publish is the built-in one: steel conical burrs, 16 grind settings, a 250 g hopper, dosing into the same 54 mm basket. Sage’s settings list for the Barista Express reads “Adjustable Grind Amount & Manual over-ride.” That is the specification any separate grinder has to beat.
Counter space you have measured, and space you have not
The Bambino Plus is 194 mm wide against the Express’s 318 mm, so it saves 124 mm. It is also 362 mm deep, 11 mm more than the Express, and 304 mm tall against 404 mm.
Those savings hold only until a grinder stands beside it. A grinder under 124 mm wide keeps the pair inside the Express’s footprint and anything wider puts you over, so reach for a tape measure before the price decides for you.
Height is the cleaner win. The Bambino has no hopper and no lid, so 304 mm is the whole story. The Express needs 404 mm plus room to lift its lid, on a clearance Sage does not publish.
The cheaper machine has the more automatic milk
Sage lists “Manual milk texturing” for the Express and “Hands-free milk texturing” for the Bambino Plus, whose “Control Panel: 1 Cup, 2 Cup and Steam button” carries “Adjustable milk temperature and texture level” and “Hot water via the steam wand.”
So the trade runs both ways. Choosing the built-in grinder at this price also means steaming milk by hand every time. If a flat white you need not practise for is the point of the purchase, the grinder machine is the wrong one here.
Heat-up, with a flag on the Bambino’s page
Sage’s product page for the Bambino Plus states the machine “is ready to start in 3 seconds”. The Express gets a “Thermocoil system” and no published heat-up figure, so there is nothing to set against those three seconds.
One caution: Sage’s Bambino page labels the heating system “advanced ThermoCoil” in its spec table while describing a ThermoJet beside it. ThermoJet is the name Sage uses everywhere else for this machine, so that is the one used here.
Upkeep differs more than the price does
The Barista Express manual gives a calendar and a named product: descale every 90 days at water hardness level 4, every 60 days at level 6, using one Sage Descaling powder sachet in a litre of hot tap water. The Bambino Plus manual sets no interval, leaves the machine to signal with flashing lights, and names no descaler beyond “the descaling agent”. Your own manual wins where it differs.
Both take the ClaroSwiss filter on slightly different clocks: 90 days or 40 L for the Express, and for the Bambino, “Replacing the water filter after 3 months or 40L will reduce the need to descale the machine.” Sage’s ClaroSwiss listing adds a trap on the Express alone, since it fits SES875 only from Batch 1735 and up.
Choose the Barista Express if
You want one appliance and one bill, and would rather have 16 grind settings and a 250 g hopper than pick a grinder yourself. You need 318 mm of width, 404 mm of height and room above for the lid, and you are happy to steam milk by hand.
Choose the Bambino Plus if
Your counter is 194 mm of free width, you already own a grinder, or you want milk textured for you at the lower price. It drops the grinder and hopper, saves £100 to £150, and gains a published three second heat-up and a hands-free wand. Budget for the grinder before calling it the cheaper machine.
